The American giant Medtronic has announced the acquisition of the Israeli medical technology company CathWorks for $585 million, a figure that could rise to $1 billion through additional payments contingent upon meeting performance milestones. This transaction strengthens an existing strategic partnership between the two companies, under which CathWorks’ technology was jointly promoted in the United States, Europe, and Japan.
CathWorks developed the FFRangio system, a solution based on artificial intelligence and advanced computational modeling that enables the complete physiological assessment of coronary arteries using routine X-ray angiography. The technology eliminates the need for the invasive procedures associated with traditional FFR (Fractional Flow Reserve) testing, providing physicians with a more efficient, less invasive tool for diagnosis and therapeutic decision-making.
According to Jason Weidman, President of the Coronary & Renal Denervation division within Medtronic’s cardiovascular portfolio, the integration of CathWorks marks a significant step in transforming the traditional, invasive-wire-based FFR segment by leveraging the power of data and artificial intelligence to support physicians throughout the entire patient journey, from diagnosis to treatment.
